Gearing up! 03/01/2009

So I changed the site template, in case you didn't notice.  This image seemed to kinda fit the adventure.  Not that it'll typically be so romantic or dreamy but most of the trail is an endless green tunnel.  Of course, there are relatively few manicured roads.

I'd been looking for a solar charger for the electronics (I think I got it down to just an iPhone and its peripherals) but honestly couldn't find one with even decent reviews.  And since I won't have much direct sunlight, that idea is not going to work.  Thanks, Phil, for the Emergency-Pro hand-cranked power generator!  It seems to work well.  I was worried because it looks like cheap plastic but that's really what makes it light enough for the trail.  If only it were a little more petite.  I think I figured out a way to hook it up to the iPhone.  I'll also be carrying an iSound 2-in-1 Charger & Back Up Battery.

I went with the iPhone because I was going over all the what-ifs and ways to document the trip.  Suddenly I had a list of electronic toys to think about carrying around.  Plus, I had been asking for a divorce from my current cell phone, an LG enV.  So, in short, the iPhone is my cell phone (reception?), my geo-locating camera (!), my GPS device (and satellite emergency phone), and my iPod.  It's also one way to access the web (however, I'm pretty sure I'll do my blogging in towns along the trail).  Just wish it had video.  It's interesting to me that this should be the first year anyone's out there on the AT with the 3G iPhone.  If anyone has any ideas for cool things to do with the apps and capabilities of this thing, pass them along and I'll keep you posted.

You know, I don't even know how I'm getting to Georgia yet or where my first food resupply is.  I'm totally not the most prepared dude out there, but I don't feel like I have to be.  And I don't really want to be.  I want to just throw myself into the situation and take it from there.  And have as little on my back as possible.
